Fiji Attorney General Denied U.S. Visa

(Fiji Live)

Fiji’s interim attorney general, who is attending a United Nations conference in Europe, was denied a transit via by the United States, the on-line news service Fiji Live reports.

Interim Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said in a statement that while he "accepts that whilst the U.S., like any other country, has the right to refuse entry or deport non-citizens, member states of the UN cannot and should not be stopped from fully exercising their right to participate in UN matters."

The United States, following the December 2006 coup that overthrew Fiji’s elected government, said it would not issue visas to members of the interim government.

The U.S. Embassy in Suva said those restrictions remain in place.
