Australian Denies Moves To Extend Fiji Sanctions

(Radio Australia)

The Australian government has denied reports that it wants to impose a boycott on Fiji’s national sports teams, reports Radio Australia.

The Australian newspaper had quoted foreign affairs sources as saying  that Australian prime minister, Kevin Rudd, is worried Fiji’s interim prime minister and coup leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, will not meet his committment to holding elections in early 2009—and may propose a sporting boycott to force movement.

But  a spokesperson for the Australian foreign minister, Stephen Smith, says while the Australian government is concerned about Fiji’s slow progress towards elections, but it has no plans to expand its existing travel bans to include sporting sanctions.
